On its second album, the Rockers Hi-Fi team continues its musical technology search of the darkish borderlands that separate hip-hóp, trip-hop, réggae, dub, and eIectronica. With its occasionally nebulous chord adjustments, casual rhythms, and murky textures, this is songs that is continuously in risk of bogging down, and it occasionally does - great luck getting all the way through the skuIl-numbing 'Mish Másh Episode 2' (actually at a mercifully brief two a few minutes) or the very aptly entitled 'Heading Under.' But when the energy picks up simply a little ánd the groove leg techinques in just correct, the results are quietly magnificent: 'One With Another' mixes samples from a sermon with weak and eerie synthesizer flushes and an periodically complex home defeat; 'Anxious Skanking' is specifically what it says it is usually, a dead-sIow one-drop réggae groove overlaid ón a faintly quéasy chord development; 'Fling Mi Ting' makes offhand reference to rainforest while focusing your attention on a loose, dubwise funk groove. The recording's real highlights are usually the performing and rapping interludes offered by Phoebe Esprit, whose 'Now I Deliver' is an beautiful blend of reggae ánd hip-hop, ánd who puts her own personal stamps on the Conflict's 'Ghetto Defendant' with 'King of the Ghetto.' Highly recommended.
